# Requesting access

When you need access to an application, a group, or a privileged system, ask for it through SECUREpass. It is granted once someone approves it, and the whole exchange is recorded.

## How a request works

You submit a request, your approver is notified, and they approve or reject it. On approval, the access is granted automatically — there is no second step and nobody has to set anything up by hand.

Who approves depends on what you asked for. It is often your manager, and for some access it is the person who owns the application or system.

## Making a request

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open the access request page

Open the access request page in the Self-Service Portal.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Choose the access you need

Choose the application, group, or access you need.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Add a justification

Add a justification.

Write a real justification. Your approver may not know what the system is or why your job needs it, and "please approve" gives them nothing to decide on. One sentence saying what you need to do and why is usually enough, and it is what gets read again during an access review months later.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Submit and track the status

Submit, and track the status — Pending, Approved, or Rejected.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Cancelling a request

If you no longer need something you asked for, withdraw the request from the same status page. You can do this any time before it is approved.

Withdraw requests you have stopped needing rather than leaving them open. An approver working through a queue cannot tell which ones still matter.

## After it is approved

The access appears in your portal. If it does not show up, sign out and in again before raising it — the portal refreshes when your session does.

Access granted for a specific piece of work should be given up when the work ends. If you no longer need something, say so.
