# Authentication modes

**Audience:** Administrator, Super Admin **Applies to:** SECUREpass V4.5.0 and later **Console:** Admin Console → **Configuration → Authentication Modes**

**Authentication Modes** is where you decide which authentication methods exist in your organisation, how strong each one counts as, and — for methods that need it — the rules governing their use.

These settings are **organisation-wide**. They define the menu of factors available across the tenant. Choosing which of those factors a *particular* application demands is done separately, when you configure that application under **Manage Resources**.

### 1. Open Authentication Modes

Go to **Configuration → Authentication Modes**.

Every authentication method SECUREpass supports appears as a card, whether it is currently enabled or not.

Each card carries:

| Element | What it tells you |
| ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Name and description** | The method and how a user signs in with it |
| **Assurance level** | **Basic**, **Medium** or **High** — how strong SECUREpass rates this factor |
| **Toggle** | Whether the method is available in your organisation |
| **Category · Priority badge** | Where the method sits — for example **Primary · P1** or **Secondary · P4** |
| **Configure** | Opens method-specific settings. Only appears on methods that have them |

### 2. Enable or disable a method

The toggle on each card controls whether the method is available at all.

Turning a method off removes it from the list an administrator can pick from when configuring an application, and users can no longer authenticate with it.

### 3. Set the category and priority

Click the badge on a card — for example **Primary · P1** — to open **Authentication Mode Settings**.

| Field | What it does |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Category** | **Primary**, **Secondary** or **Tertiary** — which factor slot the method appears under when you create or edit an application |
| **Priority** | Orders this method against others of the same strength during login. **1 is highest** |

The dialog shows which priorities are already taken in that category — for example *Already used in Primary: 5, 6, 2, 3, 4* — so you can pick a free one.

Click **Save**.
